Measure the item at its widest points

Record all three dimensions: width by height by depth. For sofas and recliners, include the arms and feet. Measure the back and any fixed hardware. Note which cushions, legs or sectional pieces can be removed as designed.

  • Overall dimensions
  • Removable pieces
  • Approximate weight if known

Walk the complete route

Measure each doorway and hallway, then check landings and turns. A wide door does not help if the item cannot rotate through the next corner. On stairs, note the clear width and ceiling height. Record the handrail position and direction of every turn.

  • Room doorway and front door
  • Hallway corners and stair landings
  • Elevator door and interior dimensions
  • Gates and exterior steps, including slopes

Check the final distance to the truck

Describe where a truck can legally stop and how far the crew must carry the item. Mention gravel, steep driveways, parking structures, loading docks, and building time limits.

  • Reserve elevators or loading areas when required
  • Move rugs and small objects from the route
  • Keep children and pets away from the carrying path
